Do you suffer from allergies? Even if you don’t, you likely know someone who does. Our canine pals can also be afflicted with allergies. Fido can react to a wide variety of substances, such as grass, mold, dust, pollen, insect bites, and ingredients in his food or shampoo. These allergies can develop at any point in your pet’s life, and sometimes seem to come out of the blue. An Auburn Hills, MI vet lists some common signs of doggy allergies in this article.
Itchiness is one of the most common signs of allergies in dogs. Fido may lick or nibble at himself, or may rub up against things in order to get relief.
Allergies can cause a variety of skin problems in our canine companions, including redness, flaking, scaling, and hot spots. You may also see problems with Fido’s coat, such as bald spots, thinning, or dullness.
Diarrhea and/or vomiting can also be caused by allergies. While an occasional upset stomach isn’t unusual, if Fido often has these issues, contact your vet.
Does your pooch get stubborn ear infections that go away with treatment, only to recur as soon as treatment stops? Allergies may be to blame. Fido may shake his head or paw at his ears, or rub his head against things. You may also notice waxy discharge, redness, and/or foul odors.
Pups with allergies sometimes have red or watery eyes. Fido may also sneeze or snore, and he may get a bit gassy. In some cases, dogs’ paws become inflamed and sore.
Allergies can also cause more serious issues, such as fainting or seizures, and can cause Fido to go into a coma. In extreme cases, they can even be fatal. Although fortunately these incidents are rare, they do happen.
Swelling—particularly around the head and face—is another red flag. This may happen if your furry friend gets stung by an insect.
If you see any of these warnings signs in your canine buddy, contact your vet immediately. Allergies cannot be cured, but there are treatment options available. However, the first step will be to run tests and find out what your pup is reacting to.
